Sugar and Livosky (1988), described how a preschool journal could be used to chronicle student observations and apply course content. After each observing preschool children for 1-2 hours per week, students applied their observations to content covered in class. The authors provide suggestion for setting up the observations, how to grade the journals, and discuss liability and ethical issues associated with this activity.
